(formerly known as First Metro Housing Company) is the first social housing company in the city of Durban. The company is involved in the development and management of social housing in the eThekwini (Durban) metropolitan region of South Africa. The Company’s primary purpose is the development of quality and affordable residential rental accommodation for the low to medium income households.
The Company was established on the 2nd December 1998, as an independent Section 21 company (non-profit organisation) and is managed by a board of directors. The organisation was initiated by the eThekwini Municipality out of the twin city relationship with the city of Rotterdam. The initiative was among the first social housing enterprises in the country and signalled Durban’s intent on tackling the city’s housing challenges in a multi-pronged approach, with the provision of rental housing to low and moderate income households forming one of the cornerstones.
Subsequent to its establishment, FMHC Rental SA NPC has pioneered social housing in the Durban area and is currently regarded as one of the few best practice examples within the broader social housing environment. The company currently owns and manages over 2700 units for rental accommodation, accommodating over 10 000 people in refurbished inner city buildings, as well as well-located greenfields projects.
Besides contributing to the local economy in the form of the creation of direct job opportunities within the company. FMHC Rental SA NPC has made a contribution to the creation of indirect downstream job opportunities as a result of construction/refurbishment activities, outsourcing of facilities management activities (cleaning, security, maintenance), procurement of professional services etc. The company also has a proud record with respect to its contribution to the transformation of the property management and construction environment through its approach to targeted procurement and Black Economic Empowerment.
